Let’s Have A Chat (UPDATED)

Wanna chat?  Alright.

So last night’s weigh in. Not good.  I was pretty twisted about it when I got home and I ended up going right to bed.  I’ve had some time to think about it and here’s what I’ve come up with.

First, it’s ‘that’ week and again, it’s trying to kill me.  Now, that shouldn’t be a reason for the gain by itself because it’s killed me before and I haven’t gained.  Add that I was off for two days last week which meant that I missed at least one day of exercise as well as having two additional lazing around days.  Add also that I increased my calories and still have to find a happy medium where I am simply satisfied and not over indulging.  So those three things all in the same week?  Um, ya, I’m not that shocked that I gained.

I was SO mad when I left WW last night though.  After I weighed, the leader asked me if I knew what had caused the gain because it’s quite unusual for me.  I proceeded to explain to her that I didn’t feel that the caloric intake that the WW program was prescribing was neccessary for me to have continued success and that I had increased it slightly.  I told her that I went to my doctor and that he gave me a calorie range to stay in.  And you know what she said?  “That’s crap!  WW is a proven program and there is no reason that 1200 calories would have caused you to feel uncomfortable.”

I just about fell down!  Not only was I uncomfortable physically but I was very uncomfortable mentally.  I was feeling deprived all the time and starting to have anxiety about being able to follow this for the rest of my life.  I understand that WW is a program that has a lot of science behind it but it is still a basic program devised as a general guideline for millions of people.  I couldn’t believe that she had that kind of nerve!  I understand that they are supposed to guide and coach people who are on the program, but I’ve been doing it for 5 months and have had a pretty good success at it.  I’m not stupid and when I was explaining it to her I did tell her that I was simply no longer counting any fruits and vegetables.  It’s not like I told her I was going to eat a half a cheesecake every night!  Good grief!

So this week while I do recommit 100% to the next 7 days, I will also be paying pretty close attention and finding out where my happy balance point is as far as calorie range.  I think I’m a little over what I need right now and so I will adjust as the days go by and find the ‘spot’.  Since it’s the spot that I’ll be staying at for awhile I need to make sure it’s the right one!

Hmmm…what else can we chat about? I have TWO new recipes for you.  One is Sushi Salad and the other is Egg Muffins.  One came from my mom and the other from my sister.  Both easy, both delicious.  Tomorrow is the regular Recipe of the Week update day and so I will post them then.

UPDATE:  Damn, I almost forgot to tell you.  I had an email from my contact page yesterday from a communications and marketing company in San Francisco asking me if I would be willing to accept a particular music CD from them if I would review it on my website.  I thought that was SO COOL!  Is that the mark of being a successful blogger?  That people send you free stuff so that you review it on your website?

Good night!

I’m glad you took some time to think it all out. Your post last night and then the one today are very typical of you. You reacted and then took time to analyze. At least you don’t just react and keep going with negative thoughts. You’ve come a long way! (Code: new mattress!)

    Re: (Code: new mattress!)

That took me awhile to figure out! But then I laughed out loud for quite awhile!

You are awesome! Keep up the good work and pay no attention to the silly ww woman. Sending hugs.

Fuck her! She’s not a nutritionist, or a doctor. All she is in the end is a fucking corporate shill trying to sell a fucking diet program that makes millions of dollars off of people desperate to lose weight (like me). I haven’t yet been to a meeting where an electronic food scale, or a dining-out guide, or one of their crap snack bars hasn’t been pushed by the leader. How dare she tell you to ignore the advice of a physician??! Oooooooh I am so mad about this!! And how dare she make you feel bad about such a relatively small fluctuation in the grand scheme of things?! Does she want to give you a fucking eating disorder? I love you Shanny, don’t let her get to you!

It really pisses me off sometimes what the WW “leaders” say. I STRONGLY feel that WW needs to me more selective with their leaders and even put them through a little more training.

Too often I feel that one person’s opinion is forced on WW members just because some ‘twit’ lost some weight and now thinks they know everything there is to know about EVERYTHING!

    Argh!

I would give it more time than a week to even out the caloric intake. Your body might have been in a mild ‘starvation mode’ if you were not getting enough calories (especially if you were feeling uncomfortable physically, it’s likely that you were not getting enough)… and now it’s hoarding… I’d give it some time to realize that you’re not going to take that extra away all of a sudden…
As for the chick from WW… talk about being fully retarded! Who even says ‘that’s crap’ outloud to someone? To be fair to her tho, had you been eating all of your activity points (which she may have thought you were), she might have been right that you shouldn’t have been feeling uncomfortable… but still, not appropriate!

First of all, that is DEFINITELY the mark of a successful blogger, being sent free stuff to review! Congratulations on that!

About that one pound. Well, when you make a change like that, eating a bit more, your body hangs onto more water (not to mention that TOM!). You know you didn’t take in 3500 extra calories! So, let’s say you lost 2 pounds but gained 3 pounds of water. Thus you would show a one pound gain when you’ve actually lost 2 pounds of fat. You know, like when you have a binge and suddenly gain several pounds overnight and then it levels off again. Or, conversely, if you have to fast for a medical procedure and lose 3 pounds. As soon as you eat again most, if not all, of those 3 pounds re-appear.

So, your water weight will ‘level off’ if you keep at it. 1200 calories is not enough for you. You don’t need to lose so quickly and you shouldn’t be suffering. I think you should stick with your doctor’s advice.

PS: What does WW recommend as your maintenance amount of calories?

Lady Shanny I think Ms. WW Leader doesn’t know how to deal with the fact that you actually have a brain and went to a Dr. for advice.

In the States there is a rigorous training program that the leaders must go through. Don’t know about Canada. Over the many, many years there have been some leader that have been better than others. . . none that sound as daft as yours. I don’t know the availability of meeting in your area. . . maybe you would be able to find a different meeting to go to.
That has helped me in the past.
Some of the leaders have only experienced a small loss themselves. Mine has lost I think like 30 but has kept it off for 18 years. But what is inspiring for our group is that – almost every year she seems to have 2-3 members that have reached 100lb losses. That is something. . . to inspire people to stick through those long journeys. Especially since not everyone ones losses are as consistent as yours.
Your analysis of the situation seems to be on point. You have recommitted.
    Full speed ahead.

    BTW…cool beans . . . who doesn’t enjoy free swag. . .

I’m as mad as ComradeGoGo and I completely agree with Princess Darcy. You’re a smart lady and you know what’s right.

Your WW leader has some nerve saying your doctor doesn’t know what he’s talking about. After your post on my site, I started reminding myself that, fact is, my weight loss is pretty damn good. And I’m not eating that crap WW food either. Okay, well, except for those damned WW Fruities. They’re like sugar-free gummi bears and they’re horribly addictive.

This is why so many people QUIT WW after only a few weeks. Unless you’re someone that wants to talk about pigging out on lofat cake and rice cakes instead of chocolate cake and pudding pops, it’s not for you. Too bad too because I think the IDEA is there. Just too many inmates running the asylum.

Madmargaret, in sitting here thinking about it, I can’t remember the last time anyone in my ww meeting, ESPECIALLY the leader, mentioned anything about produce. If I were in charge (oh, what fun!) I think I might be mentioning where I got the best tasting oranges, when strawberry season starts, which store had brocoli on sale and how to make a really good stirfry, rather than which potato chips you got the most of for the points value.

I think what people forget is that you CAN lose weight on WW even by eating all your points in ice cream and donuts. What they fail to realize is that you will not be very healthy at the end. There are foods that the body is meant to process for fuel and foods that it has no clue what to do with. I wish more people would make the decision to become healthy ALONG with dropping weight.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m eating healthier now than in the last year and a half. Like you say, even Atkins gets a bad rap because people think it’s all butter and bacon. In actuality, it’s tons of fresh veg — recently discovered the wonders of organic veg too — and whole meats and cheese and fish. And yes, bacon (preferably no-nitrate bacon) and butter too, but compared to McDonalds and KFC, they’re really not all that bad for you. Very little processed food like I was eating before. You’re absolutely right in that I’d much rather hear about a good source for good salad greens or who’s got a sale on free range chicken than how to make a Diet Soda Angel Food Cake that’s 1-point per slice (I need to know how many points for the whole thing — haha). Those things have their place, but they shouldn’t be the main focus. Am I right?

You’re absolutely right! I definitely changed the way I ate and put treats back into a treat perspective, rather than a “I can eat whatever I want because it’s in my points”. It’s the lifestyle change that is neccessary because no one stays on WW or Atkins or any other program for the rest of their lives. It’s what you learn while you’re doing it that is going to ultimately let you lead a healthier life down the road.
